Holding the rictus smile of pleasure
Above the bitter tears of disappointment
And pent-up frustration
Whilst congratulating the winner
Who, on this occasion
Is clearly the better man
And, perhaps, for ever
But, in the eyes of the world
He is the best of men
The joyful winner
True focus of attention
And he who gives the interviews
To the waiting press
Allowing the beaten loser
To quietly slope away
And reflect upon
What might have been
