What Did 2015 Ever Do For Us?

What Did 2015 Ever Do For Us??

It was a very quiet twelve months -
Nothing very much to speak of in twenty-fifteen.
I can’t think of very much of note:
In fact there was precious little to be seen.

OK - Global warming and climate change,
Causing that bloody awful weather,
Cameron in wellies, the PR PM:
We certainly weren’t all in that together!

OK - the General Election came round again:
Ferocious polling and hustings throughout the land,
The destruction of the Labour Party,
The disappearance of that chap Miliband.

And the rise of Corbyn-mania,
Something the media didn’t see,
Nor a majority Tory government,
Nor the invasion of the SNP.

Yes - Syria descended into yet more chaos,
The war creating a flood of new refugees.
Taking desperate measures for survival,
Pouring over the borders and treacherous seas.

And – now we’re bombing Syria & Iraq,
And terrorists had more airliners shot down,
The Russians kept hold of the Ukraine,
Putin the juggler, Obama the clown.

And – we lost some of our dearest:
Lemmy of Motorhead – killed by death,
Yogi Berra, Charles Kennedy, Cilla Black,
And John Renbourn has taken his last breath.

Lance Percival, Jimmy Hill, Brian Close:
Their time finally ran out on the clock.
Deirdre Barlow of Coronation Street,
And the Final Frontier for Mr Spock.

Strictly Come Dancing seemed to go on and on -
Sometimes I think they’re just taking the pee,
Downton Abbey droned itself to a standstill,
God – there was some awful dross on TV.

And it was a year of anniversaries,
Of Magna Carta, Agincourt, and Waterloo,
And just to show we’re not prejudiced
Of the First Jacobite rebellion too!

Then there was great sporting scandal,
That spread over Europe with its pall:
Blatter and FIFA mired in corruption,
And all that without licking a ball!

But Lewis Hamilton was world champion again,
Of Formula One in several Grand Prix,
Andy Murray & his team won the Davis Cup -
I just wish one of them would get a personality.

And we’ve had an end to Ebola,
And other diseases that are strange,
A British astronaut up in the Space Station,
In Paris an agreement on climate change!

So you see, it’s been pretty quiet,
On that subject I give you my word,
But apart from all of that……
Absolutely nothing occurred!
