News From Bromham - Headlines on Sunday 15th January

Bulletin From Bromham: Dateline – 15th January 2012

Here is our weekly round-up of events from Bromham:
·         Parish Council leader, Dave Wentwrong, was accused of interference in the vexed question of the full devolution of Seend from the Bromham Union.  Leader of the Seend Nature Party (SNP), Ally McDiggle, spoke out on behalf of the secessionists.  To a packed Seend Village Hall, the devolved chamber of Bromham Social Club, he said: “If politicians down in Bromham believe they can dictate the future destiny of the people south of the Kennet & Avon canal, they can think again.  We’ve got our own Post Office, shop, church and pub – so there’s no reason we can’t survive on our own.”  Negotiations are continuing over such issues as the future of muck-spreading rights in the middle pastures, and the auctioning of licences for treacle-drilling in the area.

·         The “Occupy Bromham” protest outside St Knickerless church continues.  The single tent which remains has become the focus for a range of anti-capitalist protests throughout the length and breadth of the High Street.  Dave Piglet, unemployed son of Dick Piglet the local mangel-wurzel wrangler, vowed to stay on at least until his next Giro is due.  Asked how he had survived the recent snap of cold weather, he admitted that he had been slipping home at night to sleep in a warm bed, have a shower and a hot meal.  He claimed that although he may be unemployed, he is not stupid.

·         And it’s only 200 days to the opening ceremony of the Bromham Carnival.  The head of the Carnival Organising, Logistics & Operating Nexus (COLON), Stan Piglet, confirmed that all the venues were ready.  “Well the High Street and the Jubilee Field have actually already been there for hundreds of years, so there’s not much to do.  We’ll probably shut the High Street about 15 minutes before the parade of five floats passes through, and open the padlocked gate at the Jubilee Field just before they arrive there.”  For the 257th year in a row, the contract for the Carnival catering has been awarded to The Wounded Ferret.  Landlady Eileen Dover said she expected that extra bacon baps would be available on the day.  No special Carnival lanes are expected to be built along any local roads.
