Here is
our weekly round-up of events from Bromham:
·
Bromham
Parish Council announced this week that they are to allow the Social Club
premises to be used for same-village marriages.
Carrot-pickers from the same farms will be allowed to marry one another,
but the Parish Church of St Nicholas will not be compelled to host such
services. The leader of the Field Land-Owners’
Party (FLOP), Dave Wentwrong said that he was completely in favour of
preserving the six-fingered heritage of the village.
· The
Council also gave the go-ahead this week for Bromham Petroleum (BP) to resume the
controversial process of “smacking” to get the best out of its workers. This involves driving field-pickers for 12
hours at a time under great pressure, then forcing them to pick vegetables in
the extreme cold, until they are ready to snap.
At this point, the so-called “smacking” is administered until the
vegetables are forced to the surface of the ground, where they can be collected
and sold. “Smacking” activities had to
be suspended earlier this year when residents of Chittoe reported that their
world was being moved by the sight of workers being smacked out in the fields.
