Drivel From Devizes: Dateline – Sunday 9th June 2019
Here is our weekly
round-up of events from D-Town:
1.
Shopkeepers in The Vize are delighted with the up-turn
in trade since the Mayor stepped down from office to open up a leadership
battle. Hat-makers in the borough have
been inundated with candidates wanting to throw their head-gear into the ring,
and branches of all chemists are rapidly running out of over-the-counter medications,
as the hopefuls vie with each other to demonstrate their various drug
credentials. Reports that two candidates
were seen smoking crack cocaine under the disused railway arches, in a vain bid
to boost their electoral credibility, have been dismissed as “fake news”.
2.
And services were held across D-Town to commemorate
The Fallen in the Great Teacake Disaster of 1944. On that day, 75 years ago, hundreds of men,
women and children their afternoons of pleasure when Mr Gregg’s Cafeteria and
Tea-Cake Emporium ran out of sticky buns on the afternoon of 6th
June. Whole urns of tea and coffee were
wasted, as the crowds moved on to Mr. Reeve’s Tea Rooms & Pasty Shop in an
attempt to satisfy their cravings for a good flaky pastry. A plaintive rendering of “The Last Bun”
marked the moment when the shelves were finally emptied on that sad occasion.
