Second Leap
Again we take that leap forward
From one year to the next
From an awful past that’s known
To an anticipated future
That holds all the promise
Of another hopeful start
But as we’re counting down this time
Something new is born
That extra special second
That’s been inserted
The timekeepers tell us
Is needed to keep us all in sync
With the turning of our planet
Slowing anti-clockwise on its axis
And gives us all an extra chance
To pause, to take stock
Of how the hell
We ever arrived at this moment
