Gays 2 Bigots 0

The "Christian" couple who had turned away a gay couple from their Cornish boarding house a couple of years back, then lost the court case about it last year, yesterday lost their appeal against the judgement.  They will be forced to pay up the compensation that was awarded to the two gay men.  The law, for once, has been upheld and has produced a sensible outcome.  I wrote this poem in outrage against these so-called Christians - how would the unmarried Mary & Joseph have fared in getting a bed for the night at the establishment of these two bigots? That's organised religion for you.  Ho hum.

No Room At The Inn

We run a respectable house here,
I’m sure that’s easy for any to see.
On Cornwall’s famous tourist coast,
Just a guest-house, a small B&B.

We pride ourselves on our cooking,
And service that’s second to none.
You won’t find better in Cornwall,
No matter wherever you’ve gone.

We’re not a big chain type of hotel:
There’s no sauna or fancy swimming pools.
It’s a homely establishment,
But we do have one or two rules.

This is really our home, not just a guest-house,
So we run it according to our lights.
We don’t allow swearing, or shouting,
No cursing, no spitting, no fights.

For this is a Christian household,
It’s not one of your secular dives.
You may not agree with us,
But it’s how we choose to live our lives.

We read our bible every day and night;
We mark what the Good Lord saith;
We follow His ten commandments,
And that’s how we follow our faith.

Our policy on sharing rooms is clear:
You can’t lie in a big double bed,
Or be welcome through the front door,
Unless you can prove that you’re wed.

Modern social attitudes are no good,
Don’t quote at me your human rights.
You might be looking for somewhere to stay,
But you can’t stay here any nights.

For our principles are important:
We’d like to remain quite devout.
Un-like sexual orientation,
It’s something you can’t mess about.

You may be in a “civil partnership”,
But it’s something I have to ignore.
Two men together may be OK with you,
But I think it should be against the law.

Sex before marriage is a terrible thing,
Something the Lord has said that is wrong.
So you can take your sinful selves elsewhere.
On this subject my feelings are strong.

You’re not the first “couple” we’ve turned away,
So don’t you feel in any way put out.
A bloke and a young girl were here last week.
And straight-away I started to doubt.

Said his name was Joseph, she were called Mary.
They were seeking some room at this inn.
They didn’t have very much luggage.
In fact they looked very done in.

I could see that she was well pregnant:
There was no sign that there’d been any marriage.
And when he said he wasn’t the father,
I wouldn’t even offer them the garage.

There was some talk of divine intervention,
The Holy Spirit or something like.
I thought they were both nutters,
So I told them to go take a hike.

I don’t know what they thought they were doing.
The hospitality trade isn’t a game,
So I’m glad I got rid of them:
They would have brought down our good name.
